The
INTER-TRIBAL COUNCIL OF ALABAMA'S WIA Program
is a federally funded grant program through the United States
Department of Labor, Education and Training Administration,
Indian and Native American Programs. Low income American Indians
and Alaskan Natives and Hawaiian Natives are benefited by the
WIA (Workforce Investment Act) Program by being given a chance
to better their social and economic situations through continuing
education, gaining useful work experience or simply by
receiving tools, uniforms, or the cost of a physical examination
and testing fees. Assisting those who have had to struggle for
generations to attain an upgrade in employment and gaining a
rewarding and productive job is the most important goal the
Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama can achieve.
The
INTER-TRIBAL COUNCIL OF ALABAMA
started serving Indians and Native Americans in 1991 as the
JTPA Program. Congress passed the Workforce Investment Act
(WIA) law in 1998 and the JTPA Program was replaced with the
WIA Program in July of 2000. The original program and what
the U.S. Department of Labor expects of the WIA Grantees has
undergone many changes over the years, but the overall and
one main desire remains the same...gainful employment for
low income Indian and Native American families.
The
INTER-TRIBAL COUNCIL OF ALABAMA
has a priority of service for Indians and Native American
Veterans, their wives and their children who are eligible
for the WIA Program as is required by the Jobs for Veterans
Act.
Since its conception as JTPA in 1991 until present, the
Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama
has served an accumulative total of 1,246 Indian and Native
Americans. The original Board of Directors for JTPA
included: Framon Weaver, Deal Wambles, Tom Hutto, E.T.
Davenport,
Jane L. Weeks, and Penny Wright. The WIA team (office staff,
Board of Directors, and
Federal Representatives) is greatly honored and appreciate
the opportunity to serve the I
ndian and Native American people of Alabama.
The
Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama WIA Program
is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.
